We are reading it chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Taking our time with it.

Overview of the gospel of Mark

Majority of scholars believe Mark was the first gospel composed.

Although just like with Matthew there is debate on the time frame, but most scholars say between 50-60 AD.

Mark’s audience:

Mark has a much different writing style than Matthew. Mark is action packed and moves quickly because his audience was Roman. They wanted to be entertained, so Mark keeps the story moving.

His audience was for gentile believers in Rome that were facing persecution.

Mark was writing them to remind of the hope and victory they had in Christ. And for non-believers in Rome to believe Jesus, is the true son of God and king, not their Caesar, and to follow HIM.

The ending of Mark is also debated - Was some of the ending part of the original or was it added later?

We feel it could of been added in later, whether it was or not it doesn't tell anything new.

But we haven't studied much around the timing of the Bible and textual criticism, so we are not experts, just sharing our journey of what we discover as we study God’s Word.

We like ending Mark with that the tomb was empty and we feel Mark wants you to see with - what will you do? do you believe?

And the extra verses don’t sound like Mark. And Mark knew how terrified a Roman would be if they claimed JESUS is Lord not Caesar.

Also Mark plays to the 4 pillars of Hellenism : competition, education, healthcare and entertainment. Mark shares stories of Jesus teaching, he heals, crowds amazed and compared to others Jesus is the winner.

And the crucifixion, Mark writes it as it is Jesus’ coronation as an new Roman emperor would have one.

Mark wants the Romans to see Jesus is who they are looking for. And this still runs true today.

Some things to pay attention to as you read Mark are:

  • repeating words

  • Jesus’ authority and power

  • characteristics of Jesus

  • suffering servant

  • Jesus’ actions

  • Follow

  • Jesus being alone with the Father

  • Immediately - how Mark uses the word

  • how different people react to Jesus
